Almost two thousand years ago Pilate asked the question "...what shall I do with Jesus" (Matthew 27:22). Today the question continues to be asked "what shall I do with Jesus," and "what shall the nations of the world do with Jesus." That is the question of the whole world. In Pilate's case he thought he could save himself and rid himself of his accountability to God by washing his hands and declaring he was "...innocent of the blood of this just person" (Matthew 27:24). But no person can get rid of Christ by washing his hands or drawing back from the responsibility placed before him. Pilate said Jesus was a "...just person..." and in his office as a high official he had the power of do the right thing by releasing Jesus, but he did not have the moral courage to do what he knew was right. To see the light, to know the good, to perceive the truth and not be able to follow it, is not only a calamity, it's a lost soul.

One of the great tragedies of our time, is many are not confused when it comes to separating right from wrong in their mind, but are spiritual imbeciles because they choose the wrong path. As with Pilate, they have power to do right but lack courage to do it. No time in the history of man has the world developed so many great minds. Minds that have discovered crucial scientific facts, and brought about unbelievable physical improvements. Not to mention all of the material conveniences; yet never has a generation been more bewildered, basically because of the lack of moral courage to stand with hearts right and hands clean before the Lord.

As important as all the data is and all the convenience through inventions, this is not our greatest need. We need more of Jesus, and more courage to act in the light He has given. Pilate undoubtedly had sufficient light because he declared "...I find in him no fault at all" (John 18:38). Tragically he did not live up to what he saw and knew.

Pilate was afraid of the crowd. Pilate sacrificed an innocent man. Sometimes right decisions involve suffering, even physical, along with the temporary loss of position and prestige. Pilate probably would have let Jesus go if he had the assurance no harm would come to him from the mocking crowd. This is a typical situation. People know enough about the fact of sin to live pure lives before God, but they shirk their responsibility. Just as Pilate could not get rid of Jesus in this manner, neither can anyone else.

Others who wanted to get rid of Jesus were the Romans and Jews. They thought they would be successful by crucifying Him. The Romans considered Him a traitor, to the Pharisees He was a heretic and the Sadducees said He did not follow all the right procedures. So they thought they would do away with Him. But just three days later, as He prophesized in John 2:19 with these words "...Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up," word began to spread that He had risen from the dead and was alive. When Peter preached his message recorded in Acts 4, he preached that the same Jesus they had crucified has now been raised from the dead and has been made both Lord and Christ. When truth seems to have been crushed to the earth, it always comes back to triumphant life.

Many people today seek to rid the Lord Jesus from the heart and life of man, and nations declare that He is out of date. They may believe that His ways were right in past days, but not today. They try to convince people that if they still seek to follow the ways of the Lord, they are weak and cowardly. But no one can be free from the responsibility of Christ simply by saying He is out of date, because countless eons from now He will still be the same, for it is declared of Him that "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" (Hebrews 13:8).

One of the more successful efforts sold to man that he can be free from his responsibility to Christ, is through modern customs and practices. In the modern church community, people write books, compose hymns, go to church, send missionaries to foreign lands and build beautiful buildings. Yet the hearts of men resist Christ, and much of what man does in his efforts is to rid himself of his accountability before God.

The simple conclusion of the matter is, no man can rid himself of Jesus. Everywhere a person turns he meets the Man Christ Jesus. God will not let a conscience be at ease until a person enters a right relationship with Christ or is forever lost. God has declared that everything must be through His Son. If all the world would develop like governments haveing a common social and economic program, but the hearts of men not turned towards God, nothing would have essentially changed.

Our problem is not economic or political, it is moral. And the world is suffering from spiritual and moral bankruptcy because people have tried in a myriad of ways to wash their hands of all responsibility concerning Christ.

"What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ...," was asked by Pilate in Matthew 27:22. The answer is we must accept Him, love Him, obey Him, and serve Him with all our lives, hearts, wills and souls.
